Presenter : Sherry Bryant, LCSW, CADC, LMFT

Date : September 18, 2010

Time : 9:00 a.m. - 2:30 p.m.

Description :

Once a suicide assessment is done, and perhaps, crisis treatment has been offered and used, a therapist still has an at-risk person to counsel, session by session. This presentation will explain the suicide continuum that is still a “work in progress” and also detailed interventions that can work “session by session” that move an at-risk person further toward affirming life. “What to say when you don’t know what to say” is covered specifically with helpful analogies, metaphors and cognitive ideas that could be used in connection with individuals across the life span and varying cultures. Special attention will be given to men, veterans and addicted clients.

Date:September 25, 2010

Time : 9:00 a.m. – 2:30 p.m.

Description :

This workshop will address a variety of issues related to the use and abuse of prescription drugs, including effects, physical and psychological dangers, and special concerns in treatment. It will also focus on patterns of use among both adult and adolescent populations, including the problem of prescription drug abuse among babyboomers and older Americans.

Topic : Understanding The Addict In Recovery

Presenter : Leo Miller, MA, LCPC, CRADC and Panel

Date : October 9, 2010

Time : 9:00 a.m. – 2:30 p.m.

Description :

Alcoholics and addicts when they are using are like tornados that blow through relationships, families, jobs and the community like an ill wind. Then when they are fortunate to gain sobriety everybody, from family, friends, employers and the community at large, are hopeful that now peace and prosperity will prevail. Unfortunate, early sobriety is tricky and messy. Why, because now the alcoholic/addict must learn to live by life’s rules and this causes a fair amount of re-learning by the alcoholic/addict. The question for those dealing with the alcoholic/addict -- can they tolerate (and survive) this new learning curve that must be mastered by the alcoholic/addict?

Topic : Shyness and Its Relationship To Substance Abuse

Presenter : Rev. William E. Miller, MDiv, DMin, CSADC

Date : October 23, 2010

Time : 9:00 a.m. - 2:30 p.m.

Description :

In a way shyness is similar to alcoholism – only the one who has it can really diagnose it. So, we will discuss shyness to prepare you for when that self-diagnosed shy person enters your office and asks for help. Well then, what is it? What’s it like to be shy? How does shyness compare to introversion? Shyness is one of those issues that most everyone is aware of, but of which has very little specific knowledge. Our goal in this workshop is to begin to fill that void, and to link the issue with addictive behaviors. Then we’ll discuss ways of helping shy alcoholics and drug addicts to deal appropriately with their shyness if they’re to recover from their addictions.
