Topic : Toward Best Practices in Women’s Treatment of Substance Use Disorders

Presenter : Flo Hilliard, MSH.

Description :

What are women’s treatment issues? Are they really different than men? This workshop will look at women and men from a bio-psychosocial perspective and what approaches are showing the most promise for women to complete treatment and enter into a successful recovery management lifestyle. Objectives: 1) Identify biological differences in the areas of brain research, and effects of substance abuse; 2) Discuss societal myths, stereotypes and community attitudes towards addicted women and its impact; 3) Examine the role of trauma; 4) Identify essential core practices for women that enhance treatment outcomes; and 5) Examine models of treatment for women.

: Changing Men’s Narratives in Early Recovery And Re-Entry

Presenters : Bob Carty, LCSW, CADC, CCJP, Andy Grant, & Andy Young

Description :

Typically, when men are released from correctional facilities following drug offenses, their identities from street life and prison serve as barriers to developing a new, recovery-centered identity. Using techniques from Narrative Therapy, Strategic Therapy, and other post-modern theories can help clients to create positive movement in recovery. At the end of this workshop, participants will be able to do the following: 1) Explain why clients may mistrust the counseling experience; 2) Identify clinical strategies and approaches; 3) Describe methods to assist male clients in seeing how their past identities may keep them stuck; 4) Help men to discover their strengths; and 5) Recognize the cultural implications of a client’s narrative and how cultural values may help in changing one’s identity.


Topic : DUI: UPDATE 2008

Presenter : Edward Holden, Attorney At Law

Description :

This workshop will consist of a comprehensive presentation on DUI law and the administrative hearing process. When individuals lose their driving privileges as a result of driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs, their privileges can only be restored via an administrative hearing with the Secretary of State. This workshop includes information needed for effective documentation and requisite support by the Secretary of State.


Topic : The Intersect of Sexual Trauma And Substance Abuse

Presenter : Jill Wolf, LCSW

Date : April 5, 2008

Description :

The topic of this workshop is an important one considering the large number of sexual assault survivors who are in treatment for substance abuse. This workshop will explore how sexual traumas and substance abuse connect. This includes an interactive discussion about the Rape Culture and what it means to be media literate. We will cover eight different types of sexual assault and the symptoms and consequences of surviving sexual trauma(s) and will also explore the connection between surviving these traumas and substance abuse, mental health, relationships, sexuality, and recidivism. Participants will gain insight into the impact of sexual assault and guidelines on how to best respond to client disclosures.


Topic : Motherhood And Substance Use: The Relationships Women Have With Their Children

Presenter : Patricia Aniakudo, MS, LCPC

Date : April 19, 2008

Description :

The workshop will focus on the impact of substance use on a woman’s parenting ability. We will examine the etiological factors of substance use disorders that are specific to women and how these gender specific factors affect parenting, motherhood and the mother child dyad. Implications for treatment and parenting practices will be discussed.
