The 2009 Spring Workshop Series
Topic : Come Together: Family Services to Enhance
Recovery for Male Clients
Presenter : Bob Carty, LCSW, CADC, CCJP
Date : February 21, 2009
Time : 9:00 a.m. - 2:30 p.m.
Description :
Family relationship can be a key factor in either triggering relapse or supporting ongoing recovery from addiction. In this workshop, we discuss the importance of engaging family members in treatment and identify specific barriers in helping male clients recognize this importance. We examine a wide range of family services and clinical interventions that may be integrated in a man’s early recovery.
Topic : Treating Adult Survivors of Childhood Sexual Abuse
Presenter : Jill Wolf, LCSW
Date : February 28, 2009
Time : 9:00 a.m. - 2:30 p.m.
Description :
This interactive workshop will examine the implications of adults who have survived childhood sexual abuse(s). The speaker will go into detail about the many consequences adult survivors may experience, the impact of trauma on the body, and ways to treat these symptoms in adulthood. While the focus will be on clients who have experienced sexual violence, the speaker will include issues of other traumas such as natural disasters, war, and family violence. There will be a review of the 8 types of sexual violence, rape trauma syndrome, and resource options for treating survivors.
Topic: Evidence-Based Options For Working With Resistant Substance Abuse Clients
Presenter: Michael G. McCann, LCSW
Date:March 14, 2009
Time : 9:00 a.m. – 2:30 p.m.
Description :
As a result of evidence from research and practice, the substance abuse treatment field has, in the past decade, re-examined assumptions about why people change. Traditional notions of denial and confrontation are no longer seen as the most effective basis for promoting behavior change. New models are evolving for treatment with involuntary or unmotivated clients. In this workshop, we will examine the role of motivation in fostering positive change and identify strategies to work effectively with ambivalence and resistance in clients.
Topic : An Inside View Of Substance Abuse With The DEA: Current Drug Trends And The Law
Presenters : Mark Warpness, Special Agent (DEA) & Kevin J. Powers, Division Counsel (DEA)
Date : March 28, 2009
Time : 9:00 a.m. – 2:30 p.m.
Description :
In this workshop, current drug trends and the law regarding possession, manufacturing and distribution of controlled substances will be addressed by speakers from the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA). Discussion will include the three myths that contribute to the current problem with illegal drug use by teens in the United States, the complex problems faced by law enforcement officials in stopping the international and domestic production, smuggling, and trafficking of drugs, money laundering, and the upcoming drug use trends including the abuse of prescription drug use by youth. Also, to be discussed will be the punitive and administrative consequences for possession, manufacturing and distribution of controlled substances and strategies and resources for preventing substance abuse by youth.
Topic : Chronic Relapse – The Scourge of Recovery
Presenters : Rev. William E. Miller, MDiv, DMin
Date : April 4, 2009
Time : 9:00 a.m. - 2:30 p.m.
Description :
This workshop will begin with a discussion on the characteristics of the relapsing patient and the qualities of the most appropriate counselors to work with chronic relapsers. Also, to be discussed will be the kinds of things that seem to prevent recovery and the issues that can cause trouble for the recovering addict. We will examine at length several things we can do or be with our patients and discuss why many treatment approaches fail and why applying the twelve steps as intended is so difficult in our present day.
Finally, each participant will receive as part of the handouts a copy of Relapse Warning Signs and Tasks for Continuing Recovery modified by the speaker. These topics will be discussed and shown how to be used in both individual and group sessions with patients.
