The 2012 Spring Workshop Series

Topic : Working With Veterans With Co-Occurring Substance Abuse and PTSD

Presenter : Mary Collins Henderson, LCPC

Date : February 11, 2012

Time : 9:00 a.m. - 2:30 p.m.

Description :

Trauma informed counseling empowers clinicians when working with veterans who have substance use and post trauma stress disorders. This workshop will equip participants with the knowledge, skills and ability to work with veterans who experience increased stress, anxiety and depression relative to their addictions. The presenter’s energized style and experiential approach will promote identification of steps that clinicians can take to assist veterans, service members and families in the process of recovery.

Topic : Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity In Recovery

Presenter : Prem K. Pahwa, LCSW

Date : February 25, 2012

Time : 9:00 a.m. - 2:30 p.m.

Description :

Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender people in recovery deal with many of the same issues as the general ‘recovery’ population, as well as some very unique ones. This workshop will bring a specifically LGBTQ lens to issues of substance abuse and recovery. After doing an initial “introductory” segment, we will move on to look at issues of domestic violence, trauma, sexual addiction, and how identity development/’coming out’ impacts the course of recovery for LGBTQ people and those struggling with/or questioning their gender identity and/or sexual orientation. This workshop will also ask participants to continue to self reflect on their own homophobia, heterosexism, and transphobia, as well as discuss how larger systems of oppression continue to contribute to the disproportionately high rates of substance usage within the LGBTQ communities.

Topic: Eating Disorders

Presenter: Dr. Kovita Ajmere, Psy.D.

Date: March 3, 2012

Time : 9:00 a.m. – 2:30 p.m.

Description :

Having an eating disorder is much more than just being on a diet. An eating disorder is an illness that permeates all aspects of each sufferer’s life. It is caused by a variety of emotional factors and influences and has profound effects on the people suffering and their loved ones. This workshop will look in depth at eating disorders, the causes, the effects and the solutions. Methods of meditations, such as yoga, will be discussed in this workshop.

Topic : Shhh! The Ethical Dilemmas No One Talks About

Presenters : Mary Jo Barrett, MSW

Date : March 17, 2012

Time : 9:00 a.m. – 2:30 p.m.

Description :

The ethical guidelines for therapists were once governed by simple, direct, utterly unambiguous rules. But in today’s far more informal therapeutic climate, with greater latitude afforded the therapist, the old rules don’t seem so clear anymore. This workshop will openly explore the ethical dilemmas we face around boundaries involving such issues as self-disclosure, sexuality, gifts, and dual relationships. You’ll come away with clearer ideas for establishing boundary guidelines at the beginning of treatment and reestablishing them if and when boundary violations seem imminent.

Topic : Substance Abuse Treatment: Addressing the Specific Needs of Women to             Improve Treatment Outcomes

Presenter : Flo Hilliard, MSH

Date : March 31, 2012

Time : 9:00 a.m. - 2:30 p.m.

Description :

The evidence continues to grow showing gender differences not only in the development of substance use disorders but in the treatment approaches that create the most successful outcomes for women. This workshop will explore the unique needs women bring to treatment and the evidence-based approaches that help support long term recovery.
