Health Education is provided to all Haymarket Center clients, with particular focus on diseases that threaten chemically-dependent populations; sexually-transmitted disease and other communicable diseases such as tuberculosis and hepatitis.
The educational program is an extension of the HIV/AIDS Education and Prevention Program for Substance Abusers initiated at Haymarket Center in 1991, and funded since that time by the Federal Centers for Disease Control (CDC).
HIV antibody testing and pre- and post-test counseling is available to all clients, and case management is provided for clients who test positive for HIV and AIDS.Founding of the Dr. James West Health Clinic honors the co-founder of Haymarket Center and underscores the premise on which he and Msgr. Ignatius McDermott based its treatment programs: that recovery includes the restoration of good physical and mental health.
From the founding of Haymarket Center there has been an unwavering commitment to the spiritual process of recovery. Therefore, over the years Haymarket Center has consistently referred patients to Twelve Step programs and has provided space for regular and Hospital and Institution Committee groups of both Alcoholics Anonymous and Narcotic Anonymous.
We are committed to providing the best pastoral services that we can as part of our dedication to assist our patients in gaining genuine and permanent recovery.
The Pastoral Services Department has two basic foci; first and foremost are our patients; second are our staff members. The services we provide for our patients are:
1. Pastors on the units hold groups in which general spiritual information related to 12 Step recovery is presented and discussed.
2. Bible studies lead by the Pastor on the unit.
3. Individual spiritual counseling with the Pastor.
4. A Faith Based Treatment Track that has four 1½ hour sessions each week in which recovery is discussed from a biblical perspective. These sessions are voluntary; every patient can attend while participating in our traditional treatment track.
5. Various written spiritual materials are provided to our patients.
6. Two different Christian worship services are offered to patients and staff each week. On Sunday mornings we have a Roman Catholic Mass at 9:00 am . On Saturday afternoons we have a Non-denominational Christian worship service. Of course, attendance at either of these services is voluntary and at the request of the patient.
7. The Free-N-One Christian 12 Step group meets weekly for patients and former patients.
8. Retreats for patients are offered quarterly.
Our second focus is our staff members:
1. Every two months we provide an all day retreat. Staff members are able to attend this off-site event with the permission of their supervisor.
2. Personal spiritual conversations with any of our Pastors are always available.
3. Books and booklets on the various facets of spiritual recovery are provided to our staff members without cost.
