Upon admission, all clients are scheduled for a baseline physical examination and medical assessment. This includes a complete medical history and head-to-toe physical examination by the staff physician.

All appropriate laboratory procedures follow: the staff medical technologist draws blood which is sent to appropriate laboratories for test that include CBC, blood chemistry and tests for Hepatitis A, B, and C; also, serology testing for syphilis and thyroid function tests. Electrocardiograms are handled by the staff medical technologist. Culturing the chlamydia and gonorrhea testing is prepared by the physician during the examination.

The assessment may lead to further testing or to consultation on dietary and other considerations.
