Is My Daughter Using?

I think our daughter is hooked on drugs. She has lost a lot of weight and leaves home for days at a time. She has no health insurance. How can we get her the help she needs?

Answer:

Now is the time for a frank discussion to ask your daughter directly about her activities. You could save her life. Until you speak with her you cannot know if it is drugs, depression or some other issue. If her issue is drug addiction, then she must be willing to seek treatment for herself and here are the TWO steps you can take right now to best support her immediately.

Regarding health insurance, if she is under 26 years old, you may be able to add your daughter to your own health insurance plan. Additionally, the Affordable Care Act has open enrollment until February 15th and she can call 1-800-318-2596 (24 hours a day, 7 days a week through February 15) or go to www.healthcare.gov to see what plans she can afford on her own. The website also has an option to find a location nearby to speak with someone in person. Some treatment programs are funded by private donations and she may be able to get help without insurance. Space is extremely limited in these programs and she may need to contact several programs to find availability.
