Counselor--Know Thyself of "How To Become More
Effective At Delivering Addiction Services"
People may enter the substance abuse field intending to do good work. Good intentions alone do not a successful counselor make. This keynote will identify necessary skills and critical personal attributes typically associated with effective counselors. The speaker will help participants clarify the role of a counselor within the therapeutic relationship, explore their personal values and beliefs and examine their impact on client denial, resistance, and therapeutic outcomes. The session will include attention to multicultural/cross-counseling and identify adjustments the clinician must make in working with diverse populations.

Over 50,000 prisoners are paroled each year from prisons in the United States. More than 50% of these individuals have been identified as chemically dependent or their crimes were directly related to the consumption and use of alcohol and other drugs. Based on an understanding that most offenders will ultimately return to the community, it is important that those charged with developing a plan of services and supervision to facilitate the transition be familiar with the multiple needs of offenders both as they prepare for, and upon release from an institutional setting. This workshop is designed to aid substance abuse counselors, probation officers, and correctional personnel in developing an understanding of offender needs and identifying strategies to address issues, overcoming stigma, self-doubt, employment, housing, staying connected to a positive support system, and managing triggers that might lead to relapse.

This workshop will present information on how to take a spiritual and/or religious history of a client. Also, to be discussed will be the healing power of faith, how to address spiritual issues, and contemplative counseling. Dr. Powell brings his forty years of clinical work combined with his own spiritual journey to this session.

The legal and ethical landscapes are changing. Basic guiding principles such as confidentiality and dual relationships in counseling are being challenged in courts and ethics committees. This workshop will discuss four key macro-ethical principles and the three most important ethical and legal challenges the field faces today. Dr. Powell holds a master’s degree from Yale University in medical ethics and has written and presented widely on the subject. This is not your usual class on ethics: it will help you to make legal and ethical decisions, and how to think ethically.

Recovery Enhancement Therapy: For Offenders and AOD Users;
Michael E. Johnson
Substance abuse service providers and criminal justice professionals are all too familiar with the revolving door syndrome characterized by initial treatment “successes” followed by relapse in Alcohol and Other Drug (AOD) usage, often accompanied by a return to criminal activity. This workshop will focus on development of relapse prevention strategies for AOD using offenders. Beginning with methods and techniques to identify the needs and challenges the newly recovering offender will face, this presentation will teach the counselor/provider to lean towards clients strengths and what they “can do” in the recovery process.
