For the mental and physical well-being of all Haymarket Center clients and their families, the Dr. James West Health Clinic offers complete psychiatric and medical evaluations and consultation as well as health education and counseling.

Medical Services

Upon admission, all clients are scheduled for a baseline physical examination and medical assessment. This includes a complete medical history and head-to-toe physical examination by the staff physician.

All appropriate laboratory procedures follow: The staff medical technologist draws blood which is sent to appropriate laboratories for test that include CBC, blood chemistry and tests for Hepatitis A, B, and C; also, serology testing for syphilis and thyroid function tests. Electrocardiograms are handled by the staff medical technologist. Culturing the chlamydia and gonorrhea testing is prepared by the physician during the examination.

The assessment may lead to further testing or to consultation on dietary and other considerations.

Health Education

Health education is provided to all Haymarket Center clients, with particular focus on diseases that threaten chemically-dependent populations; Sexually-transmitted disease and other communicable diseases such as tuberculosis and hepatitis.

The educational program is an extension of the HIV/AIDS Education and Prevention Program for Substance Abusers initiated at Haymarket Center in 1991, and funded since that time by the Federal Centers for Disease Control.

HIV antibody testing and pre- and post-test counseling is available to all clients, and case management is provided for clients who test positive for HIV and AIDS.

Founding of the Dr. James West Health Clinic honors the co-founder of Haymarket Center and underscores the premise on which he and Msgr. Ignatius McDermott based its treatment programs: That recovery includes the restoration of good physical and mental health.
