September is often seen as a month of change -- the beginning of a new season, back to school and routines, so it is only fitting that National Recovery Month is in September. After all, entering recovery is also like stepping into a new season in life.
Every September, the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) supports Recovery Month, increasing awareness and perception of mental and substance use disorders, celebrating the people who recover. This National observance is held every September, teaching Americans that substance use treatment and mental health services can allow those with a mental and/or substance use disorder to live a healthy and rewarding life.
Just as we celebrate health improvements made by those who are managing other health conditions such as hypertension, diabetes, asthma, and heart disease, Recovery Month follows suit by celebrating the gains made by those in recovery. This tradition strengthens the positive message that behavioral health is essential to overall health. It also reinforces the fact that prevention works, treatment is effective, and people can and do recover.
While there are millions that have been transformed through recovery, many choose to maintain anonymity or have been reluctant to tell their stories. Recovery Month provides an opportunity for everyone to celebrate. Each September, thousands of prevention and recovery programs and facilities around the country, programs like Haymarket Center, celebrate Recovery Month. Recovery Month gives them the vehicle to speak about the gains made by those in recovery, sharing their success stories, inspiring their neighbors, friends, and colleagues. By sharing their stories, they increase awareness, furthering a greater understanding of the diseases of mental and substance use disorders.
The mission of Haymarket Center is to aid people with substance use disorders in their recovery by providing comprehensive behavioral health solutions.
