Thank you to those who joined us on April 13, 2019, for one of our Haymarket Center spring workshops, “Trauma-Informed Care for Individuals with Substance Use Disorders.” This workshop examined the relationship between those events or situations that can activate trauma and how they impact substance use disorders.
Facilitated by Jim Scarpace, Executive Director at Gateway Foundation - Aurora and Joliet, IL, it was our hope that the workshop would inform attendees of both the types of trauma and their impacts on the psychological and physiological health of their clients. Jim also shared a dynamic assessment tool that provides a more detailed evaluation of a client’s “trauma experience” as well as understanding the stages of that trauma as it relates to substance use disorder.
Addressing trauma is of crucial importance at Haymarket Center. In 2018, 70% of our clients had lifetime histories of victimization, with nearly half having high levels of victimization. Haymarket Center has implemented trauma curricula throughout our programs, and on-site psychological services are available for all of our clients. A staff committee meets weekly to discuss ways to bring in more information and trainings about trauma and its impacts, and to continuously move services at Haymarket Center toward more trauma-informed care.
Haymarket Center will also continue to provide continuing education to the field on trauma-informed care. Haymarket’s 25th Annual Summer Institute on Addictions will include sessions on trauma-informed care, for example.
This year’s Summer Institute is scheduled for July 31 through August 2, 2019 at the Illinois Institute of Technology, Hermann Hall 3241 S. Federal St. Chicago, IL 60616. More information will be available soon at:http://www.hcenter.org/education-professionals.
