Haymarket Center’s amazing housekeeping staff is completing twice daily hospital-grade facility cleaning and equipping each unit with cleaning supplies. Viruses, like Covid-19, and germs can be spread from person to person, or from touching unclean surfaces. That’s why it is important to make sure that we are cleaning and disinfecting our facility often--and our homes as well. In our homes, we all need to read the labels on everyday products to make sure that we clean and disinfect the proper way.
When it comes time to home cleaning and disinfecting, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends focusing on high-touch surfaces, such as countertops, doorknobs, light switches, cellphones, and toilet handles. Pathogens can lie on these surfaces for several hours.
When you're ready to clean and disinfect the surfaces in your home, look for wipes, sprays, and concentrates that say “disinfectant” on the label. Click here to take a look at all EPA approved products for use against the virus that causes COVID-19. It is important that you follow the manufacturer’s instructions on all cleaning products. For a homemade solution, the CDC recommends mixing a quarter cup of household chlorine bleach with one gallon of cool water.
To kill germs on clothes, use detergent and bleach for white clothing, and peroxide or color-safe bleach for colors. You can also dry clothes on the dryers hot cycle for 45 minutes to kill germs.
Finally, the biggest way to stop the spread of viruses and germs is to wash your hands. The CDC recommends washing hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds. If unable to use soap and water, use hand sanitizers that are at least 60% alcohol. Frequently washing your hands will stop germs and viruses from traveling from one surface to the other, and to more people.
